After Marco Grüll, SK Rapid Wien has fixed another summer newcomer ahead of schedule. As the Hütteldorfer announce immediately before the 332nd Vienna Derby Robert Ljubicic will be a Rapid player for the coming season. The 21-year-old has signed a contract with the Hütteldorfer until summer 2024. Robert Ljubicic’s contract with SKN St. Pölten expires in the summer.
Robert Ljubicic returns to his former club
The 21-year-old midfielder (born on July 14, 1999) and SK Rapid agreed on a three-year contract until the end of the 2023/24 season return to his native city. For Robert Ljubičić it is also a return home to his former club, because he wore the Rapid jersey from November 2006 to January 2009 when he was young.
After a stopover in the junior team of the Vienna Sports Club, the younger brother of the current Rapid captain Dejan Ljubičić moved to the St. Pölten Academy in January 2014 and made his debut in the SKN St. Pölten team four years later. Since then he has made 85 competitive games for the “Wolves” – including today’s guest appearance at the league leaders – in which he scored seven goals and twice as many. In 2019, Robert Ljubičić also played two international youth matches for the Croatian U20 team.
Barisic: “See him in a slightly more offensive role than his older brother Dejan”
Zoran Barišić, Sport’s Managing Director, says about the future Neo-Rapidler: “I am very happy that we have managed to bring the second Austrian U21 team player to us for the coming seasons during this economically challenging time. Robert Ljubičić is a very promising player who can become a very valuable part of the team in midfield. He has a very strong left foot, excellent understanding of the game and is an option in central midfield both defensively and offensively, although I see him in a slightly more offensive role than his older brother Dejan. Robert is also a type of character who suits us very well, I have known him and his family for many years. I’m looking forward to working with him and wish Robert all the best for the upcoming games with St. Pölten. As I know him, he will continue to work 100 percent and more for his current club, ”said the 50-year-old Viennese.
Robert Ljubicic: “In any case, a dream will come true for me”
Robert Ljubičić and SK Rapid have already signed the three-year contract, which will be valid after successfully completing the sports medicine tests. The future Rapidler himself says about his upcoming move: “I am very happy and look forward to the new task. I already know a lot of my future teammates and will soon feel at home again. In any case, a dream will come true for me, I was allowed to play football here as a child and even then I always imagined how nice it must be to play as a professional in front of the super Rapid fans. I also really hope that the fans can be back in the stadium for my debut! Until the summer, however, my focus will still be fully on SKN St. Pölten, I have a lot to thank the club for and I would like to return that with continued good performances, ”said Robert Ljubičić.
