Zynga (Online Games & Mobile Games) has taken over Echtra Games. How much money went into the takeover was not revealed. There should have been no layoffs. Zynga is apparently planning to bring its own brands to PC and consoles.
Echtra Games was founded in 2016 and has only released Torchlight 3 so far, but it has by no means been able to build on the strengths of its two predecessors.
“Max [Schaefer] and his team at Echtra Games are responsible for some of the most iconic games ever made – and they’re experts in the action RPG genre and cross-platform development, “said Zynga CEO Frank Gibeau.” This acquisition will be critical to expand our iconic licenses and brands from mobile to PC and consoles while further expanding Zynga’s total addressable market. ”
Echtra Games will initially work with another Zynga studio (NaturalMotion) on “a new role-playing game” that will support “cross-platform gaming”.
Bernard Kim (President of Publishing) told GamesIndustry.biz last month that the company plans to continue the string of acquisitions after acquiring studios like Gram Games, Small Giant, Peak Games and Rollic in recent years.
