The Green Fabienne Fischer won the first ballot. Maudet’s chances of being elected are still intact.
In the second round of the replacement election in the Geneva State Council, four candidates are fighting for a seat. Given the unity of the left parties, the Green Fabienne Fischer seems to have the best chance of making the race. The 59-year-old lawyer can count with the support of the Social Democrats and the Labor Party.
On the other hand, the bourgeois camp is more divided than ever. Pierre Maudet, the resigned State Councilor, who is running for his own successor, seems to be the best armed of all right-wing candidates to stand up to.
The 43-year-old, non-party magistrate left Cyril Aellen of the FDP far behind. The liberal thereupon waived the second ballot. The election on Sunday should therefore essentially amount to a duel between Fischer and Maudet.
National Councilor Yves Nidegger stayed in the running for the SVP. Meanwhile, the Geneva CVP surprised with its own candidacy. For the middle, party president Delphine Bachmann is at the start.
