On Saturday, 9,600 vaccinations were given to foreigners from the region in the capital Belgrade, said Nikola Nikodijevic, the President of the Belgrade City Parliament, the Serbian cable TV company Vesti. A further 8,500 vaccinations were planned for Sunday.
According to media reports, people from neighboring countries were also injected in the cities of Novi Sad and Nis. According to reports from the Bosnian media, long traffic jams had already formed on Saturday morning at the border crossings between Bosnia and Serbia. Many citizens of Bosnia and North Macedonia expressed their gratitude to Serbia on social media. In the two smaller Balkan countries, vaccinations to protect against diseases caused by the coronavirus have barely got off the ground.
The Serbian government endeavored to present the vaccination campaign as a planned measure for business people from across the region in order to stimulate regional trade relations. The Serbian Chamber of Commerce has concluded corresponding agreements with the partner organizations for this purpose.
This was contradicted by media reports and reports on experiences in Internet platforms. Accordingly, it was sufficient to show a Bosnian passport at the vaccination stations in order to receive a vaccination without prior notification. Local politician Nikodijevic admitted that many “business people” had brought their relatives with them and that in the end no one was turned away.
Serbia is doing relatively well when it comes to corona vaccinations. By Sunday, 20 percent of the population had received at least one vaccination and 13 percent a second. The country with almost seven million inhabitants uses massive Russian and Chinese vaccines in addition to the western ones.
