The French soccer star Karim Benzema has to answer for complicity in a blackmail attempt in the autumn in court. As the public prosecutor’s office announced to the AFP news agency, the trial in the 2015 sextape scandal will take place from October 20 to 22 in Versailles. The 33-year-old faces up to five years imprisonment and a fine of 75,000 euros.
Benzema was therefore thrown out of the national team
The 81-time international is said to have urged former teammate Mathieu Valbuena to pay blackmailers who threatened to publish an intimate video. Since the affair became known, Benzema was no longer part of the Tricolore team.
The Real Madrid attacker had already described the upcoming trial as a “farce” in January. He alleged that a police officer used dishonest methods to drag him into the incident. His lawyer Sylvain Cormier spoke of “chicane” at the time. In addition to Benzema, four other people are charged in the sextape scandal.
