Elise Christie is world champion in the short track and wants to go to the Olympic Games in 2022. To finance this, she delivers pizzas during the pandemic.
Elise Mertens is a short tracker.
The 30-year-old British woman won three gold medals at the 2017 World Cup.
Because money is being cut for winter athletes, Mertens has to work as a pizza supplier in the pandemic.
Elise Christie is one of the fastest women in the world on the ice. The 30-year-old won three gold medals at the 2017 Short Track World Championships in Rotterdam (all-around, 1000 and 1500 meters). The Briton plans to crown her career with an Olympic medal next year. She’s still missing it in her collection.
Christie struggles with financial difficulties. British winter athletes were recently cut by almost 9.3 million euros in funding. In order to finance the training and her life, the professional athlete has to work as a pizza supplier in the pandemic.
Athlete by day, pizza maker by night
The Scot works for the fast food chain Pizza Hut. “Here we go. During the day an athlete, in the evening a pizza maker, ”she writes on Instagram, sharing a picture in her employer’s outfit.
Christie thinks positively and raves about her sport: “I have to say, I’ve been blessed lately. I can train with the greatest team again. The project was delayed for so long. ” Or it was on hold – a botched pun.
The 30-year-old reveals: “I start my journey as a police officer. But surprisingly, I love my job with the pizza crew. I am grateful to be on such a great team. I’ve found a new family. “
Christie recharges its batteries ahead of the winter games in China next year. Her previous Olympic experience has been a nightmare. In 2018 she ran in the shape of her life. She has already set a new Olympic record over 500 meters in the quarter-finals. In the final she was eliminated. In the semifinals over 1500 meters, she fell so badly that she had to go to hospital. Over 1000 meters she was disqualified for breaking the rules in the race. In 2014, she received death threats in the run-up to the races and then missed the medals.
