Stiftung Warentest shows which loudspeaker fits which room

Wireless WiFi speakers can replace a stereo system. This is the conclusion reached by Stiftung Warentest. The consumer organization tested several speakers and provided information about which speakers are best for the living room, the kitchen or the outdoor party. According to Stiftung Warentest, five trained jurors rated the reproduction of classical music, pop, electronics and language. Volume, naturalness, bass reproduction and stereo effect count in the wireless speaker listening test. The listener should only expect spatial stereo sound when two speakers work together.

For the living room

For the living room, it is best to opt for large speakers. For example the Yamaha Musiccast 50. Two of these boxes replace a conventional stereo system. According to Stiftung Warentest, their sound also meets higher demands. Music is usually transmitted via WLAN, but Bluetooth can also be used.

  • Strengths: WLAN has a greater range than Bluetooth; Have a strong sound and are suitable for parties.

  • Weaknesses: A power connection is usually necessary. With battery models, mobility is only partially guaranteed due to the size and weight.

For the kitchen

Small models such as Amazon’s Alexa Echo Plus are suitable for the kitchen. In terms of functionality, they are comparable to large WLAN boxes, but due to their small volume they have a poorer sound quality. According to the testers, they are more like a kitchen radio. Models with voice assistants can also be asked for weather information or lottery numbers.

It has to be handy for outdoors and on the go. Stiftung Warentest recommends Bluetooth boxes. They are very different in shape and size, but always transportable. Thanks to the strong battery, you can also play in the park or on the beach. Music comes directly from the cell phone via Bluetooth.

  • Strengths: You are mobile thanks to Bluetooth and a strong battery, are easy to use and stream directly from your mobile phone.

  • Weaknesses: They sound weaker than WLAN boxes and have a shorter range.

For the WLAN box party

Stiftung Warentest determined, among other things, the maximum volume and evaluated which wireless speakers are suitable for parties. With their bass strength and volume, most of the wireless speakers in the test can actually rock a party. Several individual boxes can also be combined. Almost all models in the test are multi-room capable. Here the control app can send the music to several speakers at the same time. The same music or completely different music plays in the living room and kitchen.

As another test by Stiftung Warentest shows, the Smartspeaker Homepod mini and Echo Dot 4 differ in terms of sound quality and functionality. Read more about this here.
