The Federal Government’s Standing Vaccination Commission recommends the AstraZeneca vaccine only for people aged 60 and over. This is due to several cases of thoracic vein thrombosis that occurred after vaccinations.
The Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) temporarily recommends that the Astrazeneca corona vaccine in Germany only be used in people over 60 years of age. This is announced by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). As the experts explained, the recommendation has been changed “on the basis of the currently available data on the occurrence of rare but very severe thromboembolic side effects” in younger people who have been vaccinated. Specifically, it concerns 31 cases of cerebral vein thrombosis, which last occurred in connection with vaccinations, mainly in women under 55.
Second dose with BioNTech?
The STIKO intends to make a supplementary recommendation by the end of April for the administration of the second dose to people under the age of 60 who have already received a first vaccination with AstraZeneca. Until then, studies should be evaluated as to whether a second vaccination is also possible with an mRNA vaccine such as from BioNTech.
