Goalkeeper Dahmen went wrong
A bad mistake by goalkeeper Finn Dahmen (48th minute) had the Dutch striker Justin Kluivert initially given the lead for Oranje. The goalkeeper of FSV Mainz 05 hit over the ball, Kluivert suddenly stood in front of the empty goal and pushed in.
“It was an unlucky day for Finn. We scored the goal for him. Maybe we’ll have a drink or two tonight and then that’s it”, said defender Nico Schlotterbeck.
In the last group game against Romania on Tuesday, Germany only needed a draw to reach the knockout round for the fourth time in a row.
Three days after the 3-0 win against co-hosts Hungary, DFB coach Kuntz switched to a three-man chain, which initially had the strong orange offensive under control. Both teams started with a lot of respect for each other and very hesitantly.
Shortly before the break, keeper Dahmen was lucky on his 23rd birthday when a header from Dani de Wit landed on the post (36th). After the break, the goalkeeper, who had only played one Bundesliga game in his career, then hit after a throw-in over the ball.
Hustle after foul on Teze
Kluivert thanked him with the goal to make it 1-0. As a result, it got hectic, after a foul by Salih Özcan on Jordan Teze there was even a pack formation. Both opponents have a history: In October 2018 Teze spat in the face of the DFB captain after a U20 international match.
After all, the German team now seemed more alert and accepted the fight. A free kick by captain Arne Maier (55th) flew well over the gate, but the Kuntz team now pushed for the equalizer. Nmecha, who is now happy to run, aimed just next to the goal (67th), Amos Pieper (81st) failed against the Dutch goalkeeper. Nmecha managed to equalize late.
Three dismissals in Spain against Italy
It was even more heated in the duel between defending champion Spain and Italy. The Iberians had to be content with a 0-0 win in the duel of the record European champions against Italy in Maribor. In the final phase, referee Harm Osmers (Hanover) sent three players to shower early.
The duel was dreary for a long time before it went well: The Italians Gianluca Scamacca (86th) and Nicolo Rovella (88th) saw yellow-red, the Spaniard Oscar Mingueza red (87th) after a headbutt. Already in the 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic at the start of the European Championship, two Italians were thrown off the field.
