In an initial reaction to Chancellor Merkel’s “Easter rest” stop, Weil was surprised at this decision. The U-turn will undoubtedly lead to a loss of confidence.

In a brief statement in front of the State Chancellery in Hanover, Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister commented on the decisions on Wednesday morning in Berlin. He admitted that the withdrawal of the resolutions agreed on Tuesday morning could result in “fidelity” to politics in the population. The SPD politician said he was now counting on a voluntary “cutback in activities” during the upcoming Easter days.

Partly harsh criticism from Lower Saxony

After the stop for the “Easter rest”, which was initially decided at the Prime Minister’s Conference with Chancellor Angela Merkel, some harsh criticism has come from Lower Saxony for this decision. The chairman of the Lower Saxony FDP parliamentary group, Stefan Birkner, speaks of a “chaos”. This shows that the Prime Minister’s Conference is no longer suitable as a decision-making body in the Corona crisis. Corona policy must finally be made in the state parliaments and the Bundestag, said the politician. “We cannot afford any further wrong decisions”. Birkner also attacked Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD): He found the Easter rest on Tuesday to be good. The Prime Minister has meanwhile announced that he would like to speak in the afternoon. NDR.de will broadcast the statement from 4:30 p.m. in a live stream.

Trade association: In and out of the potatoes

Mark Alexander Krack from the Lower Saxony Trade Association welcomes the withdrawal of the Easter rest period. From the retail trade’s point of view, this step was “overdue”, he told the NDR in Lower Saxony. Because: Maundy Thursday is traditionally one of the busiest days of the year. Nevertheless, the back and forth this week is not good. “This in the potatoes, out of the potatoes causes displeasure,” said Krack. This also applies to consumers. They would already be asking for certain goods that they expect to be in short supply over Easter – “also because of such maddening decisions at night,” says Krack.

There is no opening strategy for the Chamber of Industry and Commerce

The withdrawal of Tuesday’s decision is also welcomed by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) for the Osnabrück-Emsland-Grafschaft Bentheim area, despite the confusion that has arisen. But that is not yet a success, said General Manager Marco Graf. There is still no opening strategy for retail, gastronomy, but also for the event and cultural industries – if possible with a fixed date.

Medical Association: Signal of caution canceled

The Lower Saxony Medical Association sees the withdrawal of the Easter rest rather critically: It is “counterproductive” to cancel a signal of caution if other things – namely corona rapid tests and the subject of vaccinations – are not regulated, said spokesman Thomas Spieker. However, it is not about who made any mistakes. Instead, one must finally get down to business: The vaccination in particular must now finally be “put on the chain”, according to Spieker. Even among the doctors, not all have been vaccinated.

Easter rest was decided on Tuesday

On Tuesday night, the federal and state governments decided, among other things, to tighten the Easter lockdown from April 1st to 5th in order to shut down public, private and economic life more strongly. Maundy Thursday and Holy Saturday should be declared as rest days. However, there was massive criticism of this, and there was also great confusion about the practical implementation.
