Vienna (OTS) – Millions of people in 192 countries followed the call of the environmental organization WWF on Saturday evening to draw attention to the urgency of the climate crisis and the extinction of species. The lights went out for an hour in households, companies and landmarks around the globe. “The WWF Earth Hour 2021 once again showed how many we are and that we can work together to protect the climate despite a pandemic. When the skylines from New York to Paris, from Singapore to Vienna or from Rio to Berlin darken, it is a global wake-up call to politicians to take the climate crisis seriously and finally to act ”, says Lisa Plattner, climate spokesperson at WWF Austria. Urgent is about a nationwide Energy-saving offensive, the renewal of the long overdue Energy Efficiency Act, the introduction of a CO2 price and a consistent change in traffic must contain.
Candlelight for species protection
The WWF youth network Generation Earth attended the WWF Earth Hour on Saturday with a sea of candles in front of the Climate Protection Ministry In addition, a strong biodiversity strategy and a citizens’ council on biodiversity are called for: “The corona pandemic has shown us how valuable an intact nature is. Protecting and restoring their ecological functions are the basis for preventing future pandemics such as Covid-19 and fighting the climate crisis. If we want to protect our living planet, we have to think about climate and species protection together – for this we need a nature-friendly climate policy in Austria that is also committed to biodiversity, ”says Julia Balasch, spokeswoman for the Generation Earth biodiversity team.

In addition to numerous companies, museums and landmarks such as the Vienna City Hall, Schönbrunn Palace, Belvedere Palace as well as numerous municipalities and all nine provincial capitals, the lights also went out in the Vienna Hofburg.
