Young motorcyclist made first world championship point

From row six – starting from position 16 on the grid – Maximilian Kofler (20) from Attnang-Puchheim went into the first race of this year’s Moto3 World Championship at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar on his KTM for the French team CIP Greenpower yesterday in the late Central European Summer Time afternoon. In the first qualifying of his second full World Cup season, the 20-year-old achieved the best qualifying result of his young career so far.

And then Max also scored his first point in the motorcycle world championship in his 20th career grand prix. With 15th place in the Moto3 class in yesterday’s race on the Arabian peninsula of Qatar over 18 laps, Max also ended a long dry spell for domestic motorcycle racing: Since 2010 no Austrian had managed to score points in one of the three World Cup classes.

“The big goal in my second season is to keep improving,” said Kofler before the race. He seems to have succeeded in this endeavor. (gs)
